At night this villages whole fleet goes night fishing, with lanterns glowing all along the oceanfront. There is good swimming inside the bay where the sea laps lazily upon the black-sand shore, quite safe and tame compared to the volatile southern coasts. The shallowness of the water makes this coast ideal for beginners and young divers. Take an outrigger to the sloping reef where you can view the reef fauna right from the boat by just sticking your head underwater. Its like being inside an aquarium with moray eels, tropical fish, pastel corals etc. Several new hotels and cottages will make your stay pleasant. An excellent location to stay should you desire an early morning visit with the dolphins.
SAWAN
East of Singaraja and slightly inland in the hills is a small picturesque village named Sawan, famous for its dancing and making of Gamelan instruments. Here the local 3-day market takes place uniquely in the evening rather than the usual early morning and a festive atmosphere prevails around the bustling little stalls illuminated with kerosene lanterns. Here the vendors sell beautiful fruit and produce from all the nearby districts.
YEH SANEH
Deserted beaches and sea temples are found all along Balis northern coast. Travel down a tree lined road east of Singaraja to this shady seaside spot few people know of. Only a few meters from the splash of the surf is a big enclosed natural swimming pool of clear, fresh water fed from underground springs. Also beautiful, well-cared-for botanical gardens that include pink frangipani.
BEDUGUL
A small lakeside village in the middle of the central highlands is the serene mountain area of Bedugul. As near to paradise as you can get. At 1500 meters above sea level, vegetables, fruit, and flowers thrive in the alpine climate. Lake Bratan fills the crater of Mt. Bratan (2020 meters) where children fish for minnows, and canoe across the lake carrying firewood to villages on the far side. Take lakeside walks through pine forests with shrines along the shore. Just below Bedugul is the market, which offers a wide selection of exotic wild orchids, roses, and colorful birds. Many species of orchids and dark, heavy-coated monkeys are seen in the area. There is a botanical garden nearby, and a world-class 18-hole championship golf course.
