TRUNYAN VILLAGE

The Bali Aga people who dwell in the village have a rather unique custom in treating the body of the deceased. They simple leave the body on the ground to decompose naturally. It may sound morbid, but the people believe that the fate of a body abandoned by its soul should be left in the hands of its Creator. The body of the deceased is therefore, only wrapped in a thin shroud and laid on the village’s holy ground. Should there be another body coming in before the first one completely decomposes, it will simply be placed next to the old one. The remains, bones and skulls will be put aside to make space for new body. A Bali Aga village, the oldest inhabitants of Bali are believed to have lived here from before AD 1343. It is understandable, therefore, that their culture and behavior is totally different from that of the majority of islanders. The only convenient way of reaching the village of Trunyan is by crossing Lake Batur in a small boat.

KINTAMANI

Pura Batur Kintamani
A windblown little town spread out along the top of Mt. Batur’s crater rim. 1500 meters high, this village has cool damp climate suited to growing oranges and passion fruits. On market day, which falls every third day, the main street becomes a bustling chaos of vendors, some of whom have traveled vast distances carrying their wares on horseback.

SINGARAJA

Singaraja
Descending from 1500 meters through the mountain pass to the edge of the sea, you find the original capital of Bali “Singaraja”. Its a bustling center of local commerce with horse-drawn dokars everywhere. The local market sells everything from delicate orchids to farming tools. Reflecting their local culture, its people are noisy, open and friendly.
