The source of the Pakrisan River, a Holy Spring which bubbles up in the inner courtyard of Tirtha Empul Temple, is believed to have magic curative powers. People journey from all over Bali to bathe in the sacred cleansing spring. Legend has it that the God Indra who pierced the Earth to tap Amerta, the elixir against the treacherous King Mayadanawa, created this spring. For more than 1000 years villagers have worshipped a holy stone here on a precise day each year.
PANELOKAN
The name means place to look. At 1450 meters, this cool village perches under the sacred smoking Mt. Batur volcano. In the morning you can see Mt. Agung and sometimes beyond to Lombok. Long black streams of lava from recent eruptions stretch down towards Lake Batur, with a view that is unequaled. Curtains of mist and clouds sweep the basin in ever changing configurations, causing dramatic disappearances of the whole panorama into gray nothingness. The colors of the crater Lake below change from a glassy blue to platinum, a perfect mirror of the sky and mountains. At night see the moon sail over the volcano.
LAKE BATUR
In 1926 during a violent eruption of Mt. Batur, the original village at the southern foot of the mountain was totally destroyed. Her people unharmed but homeless moved up onto the high ridge overlooking their original home and began the task of rebuilding their temple Pura Ulun Danu. They are creating one of the most impressive temples on the island, with it's stark towers stand out against the backdrop of a smoking volcano.
